Life of Pi (2012) Synopsis :

Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan), an immigrant from Pondicherry in India living in Montreal, Canada, is approached by a local novelist (Rafe Spall) who has been referred to him by his "uncle" (a family friend), believing that Pi's life story would make a great book. Pi relates an extended tale:

His parents had named him Piscine Molitor after a swimming pool in France. He changes his name to "Pi" (the mathematical symbol,) when he begins secondary school (Gautam Belur), even repeating numerous digits of pi, because he is tired of being taunted with the nickname "Pissing Patel". His family owns a local zoo, and Pi takes an interest in the animals, especially a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker because of a clerical error. Pi tries to feed the tiger, endangering himself to being attacked, and to teach him the reality of the tiger's nature as a carnivore, Pi's father (Adil Hussain) forces him to witness it killing a goat. He is raised Hindu and vegetarian, but at 12 years old, he is.......

Goofs: Continuity: When the camera zooms out after the flying fish have gone, the raft is gone. In the next scene, the raft is still connected to the boat.

Plot: A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger. Full summary »  »

Story: In Canada, a writer visits the Indian storyteller Pi Patel and asks him to tell his life story. Pi tells the story of his childhood in Pondicherry, India, and the origin of his nickname. One day, his father, a zoo owner, explains that the municipality is no longer supporting the zoo and he has hence decided to move to Canada, where the animals the family owns would also be sold. They board on a Japanese cargo ship with the animals and out of the blue, there is a storm, followed by a shipwrecking. Pi survives in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a male Bengal tiger nicknamed Richard Parker. They are adrift in the Pacific Ocean, with aggressive hyena and Rickard Parker getting hungry. Pi needs to find a way to survive. Written byClaudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Life of Pi (2012) Review by J Z
Saw this the other night at the NYFF. Wow. It's an incredible film, atrue cinematic achievement, possibly a classic and maybe will be thefirst 3D movie to break through and win the Best Picture Oscar. Some ofthe images were so beautiful that the audience gasped at many of them.I felt transported and like I was seeing a movie for the very firsttime. I haven't felt that sort of magic in a movie theater in a long, long time.

I read the book and liked it and the film may even improve upon itwhich is kind of a miracle considering it's kids, animals and waterjust about all the time. The spiritual themes are simple and deep andraise more questions about faith and belief than answer anything. Nopreaching going on here and there could be. Without giving anythingaway, it's a wonderful story about storytelling and how telling ourstories can get us through the most horrible life experiences and tohelp deal with the aftermath of them.

It's an incredible film experience. Go see it!

Life of Pi (2012) Review by David Maldonado from Puerto Rico
The movie narrates an incredible story using the most beautiful specialeffects and great actors.

It is more that a survival story and it is not about friendship. Thisstory is about faith. Director Ang Lee use all the tools he have tomake this movie about a solitary young man not a boring one. It isnarrated by both, young Pi and the Adult Pi, it uses music all the timeso there is not space for uncomfortable silents and the rhythm of thescenes is fast. The result a very entertained film.

The most important thing of this film is it character. It is obviousbecause we are seeing for almost 2 hours just one character. So it isnot only important to have a great character that appeals to theaudience feelings, but to have an actor that portray this person theright way. Suraj Sharma was brilliant as Pi. He can make happy scenesas equal as sad, desperate, hopelessness, exhaustion and anger ones.Very few movies allow an actor represent so many emotions.

But if Pi is a good character, Richard Parker can only be describe asunique. The tiger as personality of it's own. Not many films can makean animal with so many human features and yet never stop being a wildanimal. This tiger is computed animated but the audience will barelynotice, because the way it walks, eats, its factions, the eyes. Itdoesn't matter if it is computer animation, Richard Parker is alive andis his own character just as important as Pi is.

If you think that "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" have good animaleffects, you have to see how this people make a zebra, a hyena and aorangutan. All this, combine with a photography created by the same guythat make "Tron: Legacy" looks so cool and "The Curious Case ofBenjamin Button" so beautiful, Claudio Miranda, makes it an incredibleexperience to see.

This movie is definitely an Oscar runner for Special Effects,Cinematography, Director and Movie of the year.

Life of Pi (2012) Review by noah_eye from San Diego
I was lucky enough to see Pi in full 3D Imax at a pre-viewing in SanDiego last night, and as a huge fan of the book, I was intenselysatisfied.

Believe it or not, I was more impressed with the the casting choicesand performances of the players than by the effects. Granted, the moviewas very beautiful, but in the end, Life Of Pi was more characterdriven than anything. Suraj Sharma as the young Pi was charming, funny, and incredibly engaging, while Irrfan Khan as the older Pi wasfantastically genuine and warm. Adil Hussain as Pi's father was also ajoy to watch. The characters are so rich and full of life that youreally can't help but fall in love with them. I would also like to add,as someone who spends time with tigers on a daily basis, the animatorsdid a wonderful and accurate job of bringing Richard Parker to life andmaking him the active and vital character that is so incrediblyessential to the success of this story.

I would recommend seeing Pi in 3D, but I don't think that's it'sessential to your viewing enjoyment. The 3D just takes a beautiful filmand makes it a little bit nicer. Also, if you've read the book and areconcerned that the story you loved may have been compromised in anyway, worry no longer. This is easily, one of the best book to filmadaptations I have ever seen.

Happy viewing folks. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I did. I'llbe seeing it again in theaters very soon.
