The film Firecrosser by Mukhailo Illenko is the true story of Ivan Dodoka, a Ukrainian pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union, who went missing in a sortie. Then he was betrayed by his old friend, lost the girl he loved, spent years in concentration camps and wanderings, and his only desire was to avenge for his stolen happiness. Finally, he joined an Iroquois tribe in Canada. How did he get there? What made the hero leave his homeland, adopt a foreign culture and learn a new language? While still a flying cadet, Ivan falls in love with Lyuba, a nurse. She gives him her heart, but their love becomes fatal for other characters of story. Ivans best friend Stepan is in love with Lyuba and would stop at nothing years of friendship, moral principles, or honor of an officer. The sharp angles of this classical love triangle hurt other characters who just as well need and deserve love, happiness, and respect. Story: When the Soviet troops freed Ivan from the Nazi prison, he was charged with high treason and was facing long years in Siberian camps. Ivan did not want to die behind barbed wire or wait for an amnesty. Once he got an opportunity, he escaped from his camp. He was hunted high and low like the most wanted criminal and there was no place for him in the USSR. Based on the historical realities of those times, the film unfolds before the viewer a credible sequence of events that turned the Hero of the Soviet Union into a GULAG prisoner and then an Indian Chief. Ukraine is not famous with its movies but this one has potential totouch many hearts.
It's based on a true story but it's not a story of one man. Similarstories happened to many Soviet officers and soldiers after the WWII soit gives you a sense of that epoch. It's adventurous and at the sametime romantic, historical and modern and has a touch of Ukrainianauthentic culture.
Behind intricate plot are existential topics: love and loyalty,friendship and betrayal, religion, nation and language.
It's a beautiful combination of mystic scenes, subtle humour, powerfulcharacters and cultural ideas.

Just came from the theater! I bought a ticket to this movie onlybecause not was where to sit up to 3 hours before the next film that Iplanned see. I thought somehow spend the time because frankly,expecting something dull and pathos, as usually happens in Ukrainianand Russian movies... When I got out of the theater, I was proud ofUkrainian cinematography! Frankly, a lot could be done better, but thenit would be stereotyped movie. It is amazing and exciting story oflove, betrayal, friendship and faith in the future! I was touched bythe purity and beauty of the Ukrainian language, live playing of actorsand amazing story. With confidence I can say that this is the bestUkrainian movie that I ever saw.

Firecrosser - the most awaited film by Ukrainian filmmakers for a longtime. I would to say it were really highest-quality film, but it isnot. Me and most of spectators of my Motherland are spoiled byHollywood blockbusters with perfect screenplay and expensive specialeffects. So everyone waited for something outstanding, especially afterwidespread advertising campaign of "Firecrosser"...
The film is not outstanding. It's even not impressive. But be sure: itis also not bad. Film is as good, as it possible for Ukrainian product.
If I rate it objectively, I would put it 7 points. But I remember thatit is the first real Ukrainian film. The first try. The picture whichgives all of us a hope that our cinematography is not dead and it willarise. So I just can't mark Firecrosser, which became the mostimportant happening in Ukrainian culture of all time of Independence,by point less then 10.
It is excellent. And it is just a beginning.
