Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) Synopsis :

The film begins with a body that seems to be falling from the sky, referencing jumpers from the World Trade Center on September 11. Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) is introduced as the son of German American Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks). At Thomas' funeral Oskar complains that the coffin does not make sense, since it is empty.

In a flashback Thomas and Oskar play a scavenger hunt that gives Oskar the task of finding ordinary objects throughout New York City. The scavenger hunt begins at a swing set in Central Park, where Thomas recalls swinging when he was a child, and demonstrates the fun of jumping off. Oskar, however, is scared of swings, even without jumping off. The games require communication with other people, providing practice for Oskar. They are not too easy: "if things were easy to find, they wouldn't be worth finding".

On September 11, Oskar is let out of school early while his mother Linda (Sandra Bullock) is at work. When Oskar gets home, he finds five messages on the answe.......

Goofs: Revealing mistakes: Oskar wakes to the sound of an analog alarm clock. The time on the clock says 6:00, but the little hand that indicates the alarm time says 7:00 (at around 5 mins).

Plot: A nine-year-old amateur inventor, Francophile, and pacifist searches New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Full summary »  »

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) Review by Robert-872 from United States
I have read a LOT of reviews from people who seem to know absolutelynothing about children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Thomas Horndid an excellent job portraying one. He was very moving in everythinghe did! I know he did a great job because I have two children with thedisorder and he fit perfectly between their two levels of autism. Doeshe have big beautiful eyes... sure. Don't knock the kid because helooks good. He was spot on with his acting! This story has you feelingall sorts of emotions and by the end of the movie we had all shed a lotof tears. And the tears were caused by what the child was doing tohandle his grief and understand why his dad was taken away from him andNOT because it had anything to do with 9/11. My son had lost his momand the movie brought back all sorts of emotions because he couldrelate to the child perfectly. This movie has replaced Billy Elliot onmy list of most moving story. Not everyone can enjoy this kind ofloving and sophisticated story so it might not be for everyone but ifyou have a heart and have ever lost a parent, I am sure that you willlove this movie! Another moving story brought to us by Stephen Daldry!

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) Review by greg-1260 from United Kingdom
At thirty minutes in I was wondering who would be the first to leavethe small audience in the cinema. By the end of this movie I, and thefew others, simply sat with our metaphorical mouths agape at the impactof what we had just seen. A slow, meandering, and with hindsight, entirely necessary beginning gives way to a riveting and grippingstory. A story which you would expect to bring you to tears (and itwill for some) but is ultimately about triumph. It may appear to be astory about 9/11 and such was the enormity of that event that it wouldbe easy to suggest that this is just an excellently acted andwell-crafted story about that day. That would be to undersell thismovie. 9/11 is just the vehicle which carries the message of how oureveryday, minor irritations with other people and our general lives aresimply unimportant in comparison to the reality that most people arejust trying to do their best in our jobs, our marriages and in ourrelationships. We are imperfect and the enormity of 9/11 hammered thathome. These couple of hours repeats the exercise. But this movie doesmore than use the day's story in such a simplistic way. Rather, itweaves the tragedy into the story of lives that are already living withsadness and it allows those participants to view their personaltragedies in the context of the much bigger one. To use the "device" ofa compulsive child (what a performance!)forces us voyeurs to focus moreclearly on the everyday minutiae which both he and we come to see asinsignificant. A wonderful experience...this movie will stay with mefor the rest of my days.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) Review by estherde from Houston, Texas
I had the privilege of being invited to a screening today and wascompletely blown away by this movie! Forget the big name stars in this- except the extraordinary Viola Davis who is brilliant in whatever shedoes. This movie totally hinges on young Thomas Horn, whose performancetook my breath away. Yes, I teared up at several moments, but the moviedoes not stoop to the over-wrought sentimentality that a movie like"War Horse" does. Instead, it takes you on an incredible journey andthis young actor so embodies the lead, every emotion, every challenge.I think it really honors 9/11 in the same way that "Reign on Me" did. Iam thankful I took the time out in the middle of a work day to go tothe screening. I hope this movie does well because it sure made my day.Now I really want to read the book!
