Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) Synopsis :

Manny becomes over-protective about his teenage daughter Peaches going to the falls to see a teenage mammoth called Ethan. Manny's wife Ellie calms him down and tells him that Peaches is not going to be his little girl forever. Peaches, along with her best friend, a molehog named Louis, go to the falls, but Manny stops them and takes Peaches home. Meanwhile, Sid reunites with his family, but is abandoned again, with his obnoxious Granny that wanders away, The Herd looks for her. Manny catches Peaches with Louis heading to the falls; he finds her with Ethan and Manny embarrasses Peaches in front of her friends Upset at Manny, Peaches said that she wish Manny was never her father. Soon after, the separation of the continents separates Manny from his family. Manny gets stuck on a floating iceberg with Sid and Diego. A large moving landmass drives Ellie, Peaches, and a herd of other animals towards a land bridge, where Manny had told them to go.

Story: When Scrat accidentally provokes a continental cataclysm with a storm, Manny is separated from Ellie and Peaches on an iceberg with Diego, Sid and Granny but he promises that he will find a way to return home. While crossing the ocean, they are captured by the cruel pirate Captain Gutt and his crew. However they escape and Manny plots a plan to steal Captain Gutt's ship and return to his homeland in a dangerous voyage through the sea. For years I have been a huge fan of the Ice Age series and had beenexpecting this new movie for months! Needless to say I was counting thedays until the release of the movie and the hilarious teasers werereally making the waiting difficult ...

I saw it tonight and have to admit that I feel really disappointed ...Was I expecting too much ? We were a group of young adults who grew upwith the movies, or at least liked them a lot and we felt let down. Thestoryline feels a little weak, I thought there would be a lot ofadventure and action, as in the 3 previous ones where you don't see howtime flies ... This one, if not boring, is too simple, not to mentionincredibly predictable. There is no twists and turns. When you thinkabout the first episode, yes, you realize how poor the scenario is inthis new one.

I admit there's been a real effort to create an original story thatmight bring the characters in another world and make them live anotheradventure, different from the previous ones. I think this part is atotal failure. Not to mention the "song" they put in the movie, it wasnothing but ridiculous and irrelevant, especially for a movie series asfamous as Ice Age. I thought it was unnecessary.

But since I laughed a few times and feel really bad about writing sucha "negative" review, I have to admit that some of the scenes wereabsolutely hilarious and the characters have been kept as funny as theyused to be, especially Sid (and his incredible grandmother). It's justa pity that the funny parts are so negligible ... You smile a lot, youlaugh sometimes, but certainly not during the whole movie.

Maybe I am too old to appreciate this movie as I should have, as I'msure the kids will love it and the movie will have a lot of successthis summer. I don't wish it the contrary, I just watched it with mynot-so-kid-anymore-but-very-nostalgic-eyes and went out of the theaterwith the feeling that something from before was clearly missing ...

Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) Review by Jesse Ung from New Zealand
I personally love the 'Ice Age" franchise, I really do. The first threefilms are among my most favorite animated flicks of all time, and yetthis fourth film is not only a mediocre disappointment, but also reallyfeels like a puzzle with pieces that never really fit together.

Unfortunately, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift lacks any of the substanceor joy from the first three films. It pales remarkably in comparison tothe previous sequels, and even more so to the first film. In anutshell, the films involves the cataclysmic events of continentsbreaking apart, henceforth separating Manny, Sid and Diego from theirherd, encounter pirates, then make it back home. And to clarify I amnot being mean, that is simply how...well, simple the plot is. In anattempt to be original, the film's boringly ludicrous plot isessentially and excuse to bypass what could have been a boringlyludicrous 90-minute animal Disney Channel sitcom.

While it's slapstick and humor will indefinitely satisfy youngsters,grown ups are more likely to succumb to boredom, and drift (excuse thepun) off into slumber halfway into the picture. Yet another unfortunateaspect is the voice acting. The cast seem to lack any noticeable energyto keep the film going; at times it just feels like a ploy to get asmany famous celebs into the film as possible; and do not benefit fromthe equally lazily, cliché-ridden written dialog.

Ice Age 4 isn't necessarily a bad film. Will small children beentertained by it? Yes. Will they want to watch it over and over againon DVD? Probably. Does that make it any better? Nope. It is merely amediocre animated family film. What's missing here is the originality,the clever humor and the complete ridiculousness of the previous films.Above all else, Ice Age 4 really does make the argument clear that thefranchise has indeed run it's course. To conclude, Ice Age 4 shouldhave been 20 minutes shorter, 5 cast members lighter, and releaseddirectly to DVD for children under 10.

Attended a packed preview screening yesterday (the film opens here nextThursday)with my wife and 6 year old daughter and must say that if youliked the previous Ice Ages then this one will not disappoint. Kidsloved it and plenty there for the adults to relate to and enjoy aswell. Animation quality(in 2D)was top notch and story line was good andwith plenty of humour and action a plenty. A few of the subplots wereeducational as well as exploring the values of friendship,loyalty andthe like which is probably standard fare for these types of films. As a47 year old bloke I enjoyed it and would not hesitate in recommendingit to anyone but especially for the target audience of young familiesyou can't go wrong.
